JUBAEA CHILENSIS Palm, often known as “The Chilean Wine Palm”
JUBAEA CHILENSIS Palms are some of the most cold hardy palms, surviving temperatures as low as -12 degrees C, but there is ONE big problem – it is a very, very slow grower. We have some in our nursery which are 18 years old and their trunks are barely 40 cm tall!
As the name JUBAEA CHILENSIS suggests, they are native to Chile, where they are subject to high daytime and low night-time temperatures.
Occasionally, specimens with 1 metre tall trunks are available, but they are hugely expensive. We would ask you to contact us, if you have a serious interest in these larger sizes.
Even small JUBAEA CHILENSIS are not easy to locate, as growers would rather plant other, faster growing palms.
In South America, JUBAEA CHILENSIS are now a protected plant and exports are not allowed.
